How to Be a Morning Person

I'm not a morning person by any means. There are special occasions where I'll get up at the crack of dawn to do something or be somewhere but that's usually cause it's fun and I'm excited. Other than that I enjoy sleeping and don't like to be woken up against my will. 
Since high school and having a pre-determined schedule, I've got in the bad habit of staying up late and sleeping in till whenever I wanted. It's not healthy or good for my work schedule. So I decided to break my bad habit and start waking up earlier! And by early I mean like 7ish in the morning. Ain't no way I'm getting up before that. Haha! 

I'm also sharing these for all you high school and college students who'll be back at the school grind soon enough (womp, womp). 

IBy no means are these scientific ways or solutions, these are just things that have helped me with being less crabby in the mornings! 

No. 1: Go to bed at a reasonable hour//
If you go to bed at 2am and have to get up at 6 or 7, don't expect to be Miss Sally Sunshine. Going to bed at a reasonable hour is the first step in becoming a morning person. Depending on when I have to be up I will try to get at least, 8 hours of solid sleep, if not more. For the most part if I have to be up at any time before 9am I will usually go to bed around 11pm. If it's later than 9am I'll go to bed around midnight. 

No. 2: Set alarm/s//
I set two alarms: the first is what time I should be up and the second is what time I absolutely have to be up in order to not be late. So if I need to be out of the house at 8am, I will set the first for 6:30 and the second at 7am. Or if need be set your phone across the room, so when your alarm goes off you have to get up out of bed to turn it off, or just keep it blaring. 

No. 3: Stretch//
Stretching, doing light cardio or a morning yoga sequence can help wake you up and help you feel awake and energized for your day. Because endorphins make you happy!  I use and love this yoga sequence. I hop out of bed and onto my mat and play this on my iPad. 

No. 4: Make your bed//
Okay so this isn't quite a tip to make you a morning person but getting into the habit of making your bed in the mornings will help you feel organized and put together even before your day starts. Whenever I have my bed made I feel so much more productive and just ready to tackle my day.

No. 5: Get some air//
Whether it's opening your blinds, a window or heading outside for a quick walk, seeing and feeling light and air can help jumpstart your body to being awake. 

No. 6: Get pumped//
If the sound of a buzzing alarm or dinging clock puts you in a bad mood even before you wake up, try setting your alarm to one of your favorite songs. Or make a super fun, and upbeat playlist to get your day going to the beat of the right drum. Keep the mojo going as you make/eat breakfast and get ready. One of my favorite songs that gets me dancing and awake is Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon. 

No. 7: Take your time//
Nothing spoils a morning than rushing around like a maniac trying to get ready. The key to being a morning person is to plan it out. You can't achieve this if yo're scrambling around trying to put on makeup, shove some breakfast in your mouth, all while trying to print out your assignments. Giving yourself time to wake up as slow and naturally as you can will help you not hate the mornings. Having a leisurely mornings will make them and you much more pleasant. 
No. 8: Treat yo self//
I'm all about treatin yo self. Indulging in something that makes you happy, whether it's taking a nice, hot shower, eating a donut or catching up on the latest celeb gossip will help put you into a good mood and feel less crabby. I try to indulge in either a sweet treat or catching up on one of my favorite TV shows. Currently it's The Astronaut Wives Club and Teen Wolf. 

Those are all my tips to helping you become a morning person! I use them and they definitely are working. I'm slowly, but surely, enjoying my mornings and becoming more of a morning person!

  1. Such a helpful post! I'm trying to become more of a morning person so I can get much more done throughout the day.. I find going for a run before breakfast helps me feel pumped and energised for the day, plus I don't feel as guilty about having pancakes for breakfast!

    1. Yay! Glad you found it helpful Georgina! I wish I was one of those people who could be motivated enough in the morning to go for a run but I'm just not. Haha!
